statement
I am exploring the play between simplicity and complexity, surface and depth and the technological versus the hand-crafted. Using a process where I periodically impose an idiosyncratic order on the random, I see what patterns and forms come out of this interchange and keep what delights me.In that way, my work is characterized by a tight coherence and random freedom.
My primary material is not paint at all but punched out dots, quilting lines and specialty tape. These pieces of tape and paper are collaged onto the painted surface in a labour-intensive process that is a combination of random placement and a corresponding deliberate response.
Through this process, compositions emerge that recall 3-D maps, fictional landscapes and architectural spaces. These images suggest computer-generated compositions yet the surface reveals an essential engagement with the materials and the many layers laid down by hand. From a distance my practice appears to continue along the path laid by the minimalist movement of the Modernist painters, but upon closer inspection the work is revealed to play with this trope in a variety of ways. While colour harmonies are paramount and allude to this period, my work reveals crucial differences in the means of execution and in its materiality.
